Bauhaus Poster Design (Joschmi)

The Bauhaus was founded in 1919 in Weimar, Germany by architect Walter Gropius. Literally translated as “building house,” the Bauhaus style was born out of the challenge of designing basic necessities like buildings, tables, and chairs, with the core idea that form follows function.
In 1925 the school moved to the industrial city of Dessau, where its ideal of creating a new unity of crafts, art, and technology flourished. Many now-iconic designers called the Bauhaus home, and their legacy of industrial design and functional yet striking typography lives on today.
Typography from Bauhaus Dessau is instantly recognizable. Simple geometric forms, unadorned with serifs. Vibrant, expressive colors. Balanced layouts that convey a clear and direct message. Some of the world’s most celebrated ad layouts, political posters, album covers, and logo designs owe their power to lettering designs created at Bauhaus Dessau.
For this project, I will develop systems of visual organization and learn more typography skills in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. Research my typeface's history as well as the typeface designer. Write a short paragraph about the typeface and its designer that I will use as copy on your poster. It should provide information about the typeface and fit with your design concept to help 'sell' the typeface.

Goals:
To develop conceptual thinking skills. To communicate ideas visually and verbally. To explore typography styles.

Directions:
Design a poster that advertises, and promotes a specific typeface, highlighting the history and purpose of the typeface. You MUST select one from the following typefaces:
  • Joschmi
  • Xants
  • CarlMarx Regular
  • CarlMarx Bold
  • Alfarn
  • Reross Quadratic
  • Reross Rectangular

The poster should strongly communicate the unique visual characteristics of the typeface that is chosen
The Poster MUST Include:
  • the name of the typeface
  • all uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and other characters. See below:

    ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWKYZ
    abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
    12345678910!@#$%^&*()_+=-\|[ ]} {'";:/?.>,<,
  • Individual letters, numbers, or characters to help strengthen the concept
The Poster MUST also include the following in one or more paragraphs. Go online research and find information about your typeface. Find the following information:
  • Information about the Bauhaus movement
  • typeface designer's name
  • history of, facts about, and/or inspiration for the typeface
  • poster size must be 18" x 24"
This was the final product of my poster but I have other versions. I wanted to keep it simple like other Bauhaus posters and also use half circles since they are used to create the font.
This poster with the peachy color theme was my favorite but it didn't go with the Bauhaus color scheme as well.
This was my first draft of my design which you can also see in my sketches but to get my final idea, I combined this and the idea of a big main half circle.
